Biggest Causes Of Stress
Take Your Power Back!

Article

What are the biggest causes of stress? You probably know stress when you see it: your heart rate increases, your palms feel sweaty, your thoughts race, and you feel as if you head might explode.

How will you ever free yourself from its grip if you don't know what's actually causing the stress in your life?

Leadership Quote

"There is something that is much more scarce, something rarer than ability. It is the ability to recognize ability."

- Robert Half

Two people with the exact same job may come home from work with entirely different feelings about the stress related to their work – in other words, stress is not caused by an event, per say, but our body and mind's reaction to an event.

In an effort to assist you recognize the potential stressors that may be impacting the quality of your life, here is a general list of the biggest causes of stress:

  • Stress on the job
Workplace stress is incredibly common. Pressing deadlines, judgmental bosses, intimidating presentations, difficult tasks, money, etc – all of these things threaten to stress you out!

But remember, stress doesn't just happen because of A, B, or C. Stress is the way we deal with situations around us. If we hate our job or we don't believe we're very capable in our role, or we're hardly making enough money to pay the bills, then we're going to have hard time dealing effectively with the stress we feel.

  • Stress in the Classroom
If you're a young person, some of the biggest causes of stress probably greet you at high school or college. Today, adolescents face great pressure to succeed in academics, and meet the high expectations of their parents and educators.

Do you suffer from test anxiety? Do you worry the teacher will call on you for an answer you won't know?

  • Stress in Relationships
A math problem may be challenging, but it was once said that relationships are the most challenging of all. Your interactions with your boss, co-workers, friends, significant other, children, siblings, parents, and any other person in your life can be one of the biggest causes of stress.

Typically, stress in relationship is a direct result of a lack of communication. Many times a good one on one discussion can alleviate a tremendous amount of emotional stress.

Remember, however, that none of the above mentioned stressors are fixed. You have the ability to not only change your environment and lifestyle, but to take back the power you give to outside events and to stop negatively reacting to situations that you can't change.

If you need some help channeling your inner-strength, then read Dr. Orison Swett Marden's “Getting On,” a powerful and insightful book about finding the emotional reserves you have within.
