Causes of Teenage Stress
Learn How To Support Your Teen

Article

What are the causes of teenage stress? If you have an adolescent in your home, you probably feel in the dark sometimes about what he or she is going through.

Your teen may have a different mood for every day and you may feel that you're waking up to go to battle every morning.

Leadership Quote

"All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common; it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership."

- John Kenneth Galbraith

The fact is every teen is going to demonstrate some level of negative behavior.

Maybe as a parent, you don't remember what it was like to go to high school, deal with the various pressures of being a teenager, or the high expectations of teachers and parents.

Whenever you feel lost and confused about how to help your teen, it might be a good idea to try to remember what it felt like when your crush rejected you or when you failed that important math test.

Naturally, there will always be a clash of generations that is heightened during the teenage years. So it may not be wise to spend a ton of time overanalyzing precisely what causes of teenage stress. In this day and age, there are more stressors placed upon young people than you probably realize.

Of all the causes of teenage stress, the most prominent is that of academic pressure. Sure, teenagers have been attending high school for decades, but today getting into college is more competitive than ever.

Teens may feel tremendous pressure to do well in their classes and also excel in extracurricular activities. This pressure is often unfairly placed upon them and can be more damaging than helpful.

Additional causes of teenage stress include peer pressure. Pressure to do drugs, have sex, wear certain clothes, adopt certain beliefs, talk a certain way – all are constantly on the minds of teens at school every single day. It can all be a little overwhelming and frustrating for teens.

Teenagers increasingly have to cope with divorced families as well. As the divorce rate increases, so do the levels of teen depression. Keep this in mind as you assess how well your teen is dealing with the pressures in his or her life.

If your teen is struggling with stress, consider giving them the book “Thoughts About Character,” by the famous 20th century self-help writer Dr. Orison Swett Marden.

“Thoughts About Character” has an exciting proposition for all readers that is sure to free them of the expectations of others around them: that their characters are their most precious possession. It is a must-read for everybody, but mostly for those who are in the process of defining themselves as human beings.

You can also listen to five of Dr. Marden's classic books in a convenient, easy to download audio format with the Leadership Series For Successful Living.
