Coping With Workplace Stress

Article

Everyday Americans are coping with workplace stress as best they can.

But statistics show they are not as successful at this as they could be – as more than half of them suffer from medium to high levels of stress and anxiety, and sometimes even depression. So why is coping with stress in the workplace so difficult?

Leadership Quote

"Things may come to those who wait, but only what’s left behind by those that hustle."

- Abraham Lincoln

In the United States, the business world is fast-paced and brutally competitive.

It can be hard to keep up and still maintain your integrity as you try to achieve success in all of life’s key categories.

As a result, your physical and emotional wellbeing can really take a beating if you are not successfully juggling the various demands of your home life and a full-time career.

Here are some tips to coping with workplace stress so you can be more than just a productive employee, but a happy human being:

  • Get a pair of headphones! Do you need to tune out your office surroundings while you work on various tasks? Listening to your favorite music may not only help you focus on your job, but it will put you in a good mood and thus, help in coping with workplace stress.
  • Let go of it all when you go home Your home should be a sanctuary, a place where you can say goodbye to stresses from work and focus on your family and relax. If you can't do this, it might be a good idea to develop new hobbies and habits of meditation and journal writing.

If you make certain to utilize your daily planner, and write down all your job related duties and timelines, you can more easily turn off your work when you are home, because you’ll know that you won’t forget anything important.

  • Don't do work you don't like Sometimes we have to temporarily do jobs we don't love, in the name of making a living. However, if you're not making a life for yourself – it's simply not worth it.

You should find joy in your work if you are ever to truly get the most out of life. Constant boredom, hardship, and stress over your work-related duties is no way to manage your career.

So if you find that coping with workplace stress is virtually impossible, you are on the wrong career path! Don't be afraid to get on another one. You have less to lose than you think.

  • Consider taking a stress leave It is possible to take off time from work, beyond the typical vacation, if you're enduring an unhealthy amount of stress. After all, your boss wants you to be in good shape while on the job, so it can sometimes benefit you and him or her if you take a stress leave.

Explore your options here if you have serious problems with stress. Talk with your boss or human resources representative to find out if this is an option.
