Do you know what the current issues in education are? They are often overlooked in the media, as foreign policy and general economic concerns and even entertainment gossip frequently dominate the headlines. Why? Well, the country's future is its youth. The key to the success – or affluence, democracy, and overall wellbeing – of every developed nation, is its people's access to education. While most agree about the high the value of education, there is a lot of debate about the quality of public education in the United States. While people often vehemently disagree about the current issues in education, very few would not want their children to be offered the opportunity for a good, strong education. The end product is not all that disputable – it's simply the means to get there that make up the most of the current issues in education. Because high school students have been testing lower in many subjects, particularly math and science, as compared to students in other countries, the current issues in education have largely revolved on improving the secondary level of education. Increased pay to teachers; standardized testing, redistribution of money, busing, and a slew of other remedies have been proposed by the democratic and republican parties to solve the mounting problems in the education system. The most interesting current issues in education include inner-city public schools versus suburban, as wealthier districts, not surprisingly, tend to have better performing students than poorer. Other topics of debate include college tuition and loan rates, scholarships and progressive movements like affirmative action. All in all, these issues are complicated and confusing and are often too overwhelming for the average person to make sense of by simply reading a few articles. However, education is an important news item that should be taken seriously by every American. More citizens need to be engaged in the debate and speak out about what they feel is important to the future of our young people. An American who did take education seriously in the early 20th century was Dr. Orison Swett Marden, self-help author of powerful classics like “Pushing To The Front” and “The Young Man Entering Business” and “Woman and Home.” If you want to hear more on his timeless teachings on the subject of education and self-improvement, you can use the Leadership Series For Successful Living to download five of his classic books online.
