Definition Of Depression
Identifying The Root Cause

Article

The definition of depression. This is an illness that is not so easy to determine. That's probably because depression is an overused word in today's day and age.

Yes, doctors know a lot more about our emotional state than they used to and so does the average person as a result. However, with newfound knowledge comes newfound confusion.

What we've come to find out over time is that depression comes in many shapes, sizes and forms.

Not only do individuals experience depression differently, but there are different kinds of depression and different levels of it – mild to severe.

So, when we try to decide upon the definition of depression, this is why it's so difficult to pinpoint. We see commercial advertisements for pills meant to cure our depression and from the looks of those, it seems like there's a regular epidemic of depression in America.

It seems that being depressed is a pretty typical condition that we can easily fix. But is this true?

There are some types of depression that most Americans will thankfully never see. But because so many people are quick to call themselves depressed, the definition of depression gets misinterpreted and those with serious cases – potentially life threatening – may get overlooked or not taken seriously.

As with many conditions, it's important to understand all the nuances that come with it. Are you suffering from depression? In order to get proper treatment, talk to your doctor.

In the meantime, why not “check your self-talk”? Do you talk negatively to yourself?

Does that tiny little voice in your head always tell you that you are not good enough; that you just don’t measure up? Most depression starts as a result of prolonged negative self-talk.

The good news is that you can change that negative self-talk to positive self-talk. You can even look for a little inspiration from the late great writer Dr. Orison Swett Marden.

Dr. Marden's audience from the early 20th century (when he was writing) consisted of people who were not necessarily wealthy or destined for greatness. However, Dr. Marden believed in them – he believed that if they were confident enough and had a strong will to succeed, they inevitably would do just that.

In his book “The Victorious Attitude,” Dr. Marden really insisted on this. In other words, Dr. Marden informed Americans that thoughts were just as important as any other part of their life.

What does this mean to you? It means that if you suffer from negative self-talk, you can remedy this on your own, with just a little change of your mind –you can change your life.

So give Dr. Marden a try today. Download five of his classic books online with the Leadership Series For Successful Living right away. You have very little to lose and a whole new happy life to gain.
