Depression and thinking right obviously do not go hand in hand. Very rarely do we think about depression as a choice. And certainly for many of us, depression is a difficult monster to chase away and it will require a great deal of outside help – therapy and medicine perhaps – to free us from it. If you really want to say goodbye to depression, you have to learn to replace thoughts of fear, worry and anxiety, with feelings of hope, joy and happiness. Thinking is not an act that we have zero control over. Just as we choose what shampoo to wash our hair with or what time to go to sleep at night or how many hours to study for an exam, we can also make decisions about what we think and when we think it. This is seen by many as a pretty radical idea, since most people believe they have no control over their thoughts. It's a concept that was originally imported from Europe into the United States by Dr. Orison Swett Marden, one of the very first self-help authors. Dr. Marden interrupted his business successes to pursue a career in writing after he became moved by the New Thought revolution in Europe. Inspired by thinkers like Samuel Smiles, Dr. Marden was determined to change the way Americans thought about their lives. In the 20th century, many Americans were unsure of what to do with their newfound freedom. In his many classic books, Dr. Marden urged readers to stop thinking negatively, in the sense that life happens to a person, versus proactively thinking positively and taking control of one’s own destiny. He believed that mastering our thoughts would make all the difference in ones ability to succeed in life. Hence the concept of depression and thinking right as being mutually exclusive things. Essentially, negativity creates more negativity and happiness creates more happiness. This is the Law of Attraction, which states like attracts like. When one is cultivating habits of thinking positively and with hope for the future and expectations of success, then he or she will begin to see success in every detail of his or her life! Dr. Marden published about two books a year during this 30-year writing career. “Self-Investment” was one of his most notable, as it gave the central message that the most important investment we can ever make in our life is in ourselves. Self-investment is a greater asset than a new car or a house or a business! This goes in line with this discussion about depression and thinking right. If we can learn to shift our attitude about the world, we can suddenly play an important role in it.
