Depression In Adolescents
Here’s a New Thought!

Article

Unfortunately, depression in adolescents is on the rise. Of course every teen will have normal angst-ridden moments when they talk back to their parents or cry over a girl or boy at school, these things are normal teenage behavior, but depression is a completely different animal.

So why is there this new trend and what can you do about it?

Pressure to get into college from parents and educators and to be as attractive as possible from the media are crushing down on a lot of today's youth.

As well, the rates of divorce and other factors undoubtedly have effects on a young person's psyche.

However, there is a lot of tools and resources out there to help address depression in adolescents. From therapists to medicines, a teen suffering from anxiety, stress, or depression has options – they just need to know what they are!

There are other resources, too, including the inspiring teachings of the late Dr. Orison Swett Marden.

Dr. Marden was susceptible to depression as a young boy and teen. While he grew up in a very different time than today's generation – the late 19th century to be exact – he still knew what it was like to feel hopeless about life.

He was born with very little going for him, as he was orphaned and abused at a young age.

However, Dr. Marden was resolute in his desire to succeed in life, and he did. His will and determination eventually got him a degree from Harvard and a writing career.

He taught a new philosophy that provided hope and optimism to millions worldwide. He published a series of self-help books geared at Americans who were in the dark about what to do with their individual freedom.

Dr. Marden had a twist on many of these books, however. They weren't mainly for adults, but also for children and adolescents.

He knew that young people were inspired by real-life stories of normal people who became great. Marden delivered those stories in spades.

Other books were more practical, like “Power of Personality,” which tells readers that their dress and manners matter and then explains why they matter. (This book is great for young adults who are skeptical of this!)

If you want to listen to Dr. Marden's most favored classic books, you can! With the Leadership Series For Successful Living, you can download his books for audio, online.

Dr. Marden didn't think depression in adolescents was acceptable, he knew the power that words have - both to hurt as well as to heal.
