Depression In Men

Article

Depression in men is a tricky issue, because only 1 in 10 depressed people are male.

Yes, more than 11 million Americans suffer from depression every year – but they are mostly women.

Leadership Quote

"Obstacles are things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."

- E. Joseph Cossman

Very often, men suffering from stress and anxiety may feel hesitant and embarrassed to come forward about their troubles or ask for the help they need.

While the symptoms for depression are the same for women and men alike, depression in men seems to manifest in unique ways. For example, men tend to be less earnest with their emotional turmoil and more likely to deny they have a problem.

However, men are more inclined to discuss physical symptoms, like feeling fatigued, anxious, panic sticken or ill.

Depression in men can be a scary thing, because men are so much more unwilling to seek help than women.

Thus, they are at a greater risk of acting out in violence and if they suffer silently for long enough, they may even become consumed with thoughts of suicide.

So why is depression in men so different than depression in women? Each sex tends to battle emotional and physical problems differently, sometimes due to biology, and sometimes due to society.

It's important to understand that most men are given the message that being emotional and open to their own feelings is somehow a feminine trait.

This is why so many men hide their depression.

But there is hope! Depression in men and women can not only be treated, but cured. Many men can find the courage to confront their depression and change their lives with the help of a competent professional.

Another great resource that can open your eyes to seeing ways of living a better, more balanced and more fulfilling life, is the Leadership Series For Successful Living.

In this special audio series, you can listen to the teachings Dr. Orison Swett Marden – the founder of the American success movement in the 19th century – and his sage advice for how to live a happy and decidedly non-depressed life!

For men troubled with depression, it might be refreshing to hear insight from another man – a man who didn't let his poor upbringing and constant disappointments prevent him from achieving wild success in his adult life.

Dr. Marden's book “Cheerfulness as a Life Force” has an especially inspiring message, as it states that the man with a smile is a man who others want to be around and is thus a man who will succeed in life.

So if you recognize depression in men, or anyone that you care about, offer up this special audio series risk free.
