Depression In Teenage Girls
Things Mom May Not Understand

Article

Depression in teenage girls is a subject of growing concern.. Young women these days have challenges that young men simply can't relate to. In fact, many grown women can't even relate to them.

Girls have a new host of problems that generations before them
just didn't encounter.

So, what are the unique influences out there that may threaten to bring down a girl's spirits?

More and more, we hear of girls who are battling dangerous, life-threatening eating disorders and enduring painful bouts of depression. How could this be?

Shouldn't a high school student be living a carefree existence, only occasionally interrupted by petty concerns like who to go to prom with? Or worrying about how they will score on their next important test at school?

In order to fully understand depression in teenage girls, we must understand the causes of it. Unfortunately, the issues are complex and the research and related conclusion can vary, but we can provide some educated speculation.

Some of the leading causes of depression in teenage girls includes the following:

  • Society's emphasis on being skinny
The models that grace the magazines, the actresses that star in films and television shows, and the women who dance in music videos typically have one thing in common: they are very thin.

This certainly isn't always the case, but on the whole – a thin body is repeatedly touted as beautiful and ideal. That body image is unrealistic for most teenage girls, but they don't realize this. This focus on beauty is not good for girls who are developing an idea of who they are!

This unrealistic expectation of body image is reinforced over and over again on a daily basis, and it sets up most girls to become dissatisfied with themselves. Their self-esteem can be greatly damaged as a result.

  • Divorce
A teenage girl's relationship with her father has been proven to be very important in her growth and development. Depression in teenage girls may be largely a result of increased divorce rates that send the father far away from the home.

These are only two factors that specifically relate to teenage girls and can help us understand how we can treat depression that this specific group may endure.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden spells out many techniques for self-improvement in his classic book “Success Fundamentals.” Dr. Marden published many books that helped to inspire Americans to overcome emotional problems.

You can download some of his greatest books online and listen to them immediately with the Leadership Series For Successful Living.

So for the teen who's having trouble finding his or her purpose in life and is too consumed with the dark days of adolescence, consider introducing him or her to Dr. Marden's compelling message.
