Depression In Teenagers
Secure & Protect Your Teen

Article

Did you know that depression in teenagers is on the rise? This is a fact that is as strange as it is scary. Many adults are confused about the issue.

In many respects, parents didn't struggle with the same problems as teens do today. So why are the rates of teen depression, and most frighteningly, suicide, increasing?

There are various factors that may contribute to these tragic trends.

These factors may include:

  • The media
Teens are constantly exposed to media, whether from the television or the Internet. They are frequently sent messages that don't always help out a parent.

For instance, in music videos and films today, a thin body is stressed as the ideal for a woman. This has fueled eating disorders and probably been one major contributor to depression in teenagers!

  • Broken families
Divorce rates have only recently began to drop, but since the early mid-1900's, they have gradually been on the rise .

What does this mean? Teens are growing up with only one parent consistently in the house and they have confused ideas about the world, sometimes, as a result. Even the most well intentioned parents are typically not prepared to raise a child adequately after a divorce.

As a result, the child may suffer from the experience. They may even blame his or herself for the divorce.

  • Academic pressure
One of the most overlooked influences of depression in teenagers is how difficult it is for teens to get into the college of their choice.

Because it is so competitive to get accepted into a good university, a teen is often required to have excelled at a sport or hobby or some other activity, in addition to having a superior SAT score and GPA.

Sometimes this pressure is simply too much to handle.

Whatever the cause, depression in teenagers should be taken seriously. If you suspect your teen is battling something more than just typical angst, here are the signs to watch out for: decreased appetite, drop in grades, truancy, withdrawal form social circles and activities, and feelings of hopelessness and low self worth.

You might want to introduce your unhappy teen to the classic book “Ambition,” by the late great self-help author Dr. Orison Swett Marden.

“Ambition” will help your teen focus on his or her interest and work on perfecting it so as to pursue a dream or goal more effectively. Sometimes all someone needs is to be pointed in the right direction!

You and your teen can listen to “Ambition” and several other inspirational books by Dr. Marden in the newly produced Leadership Series For Successful Living.
