Dealing With Depression In Teens

Article

Depression in teens is certainly not a new phenomenon.

It's normal for high school students to feel the blues – whether they're dreading their next test or are upset that their crush doesn't know they exist – there's always something that seems pressing, and as a teenager, the emotions involved tend to be a bit over the top.

However, how do parents recognize actual depression in teens?

What is the difference between typical angst and a legitimate mental illness? How do you know if your child is normal or at risk of something that is more serious?

First of all, communication should always exist between you and your teen. Whatever your teen is struggling with, help to give him or her perspective – as teens often overreact, hence their moodiness.

Encourage them to make new friends, join the sports team or choir, and tell them that it's okay to ask for help from an adult, even if it's not you.

Depression in teens, while normal at some level, should not be dismissed easily.

For your further knowledge, here are some symptoms of depression in teens to watch out for:

  • Changes in sleeping and eating patterns
  • Poor grades
  • Little motivation to spend time with friends or be a part of activities
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Rage
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Experimentation with drugs, alcohol and/or sex

If you are concerned about your teen, there are a number of options you have. You and your teen will need help to work out any issues.

Therapy and medication may not be necessary as there are some ways you can help yourself and your child.

For example, Dr. Orison Swett Marden, the founder of the success movement in the United States in the late 1800's; who imported New Thought ideas from across the sea to American’s hungry for his message, has a series of books that can be instrumental to improving your family's life.

Dr. Marden's book “An Iron Will” might be just what your teen needs to get back on track and find the motivation they've been lacking – as it teaches that they are indeed in control of their lives and whatever they want in life, they can achieve, as long as they have the will and determination.

Fortunately, you can listen to “An Iron Will” in addition to four more of Dr. Marden's most famous books in a convenient, easy to download format in a Leadership Series For Successful Living.

It's best to use all your resources, not just one, to tackle emotional issues. You can do it, and Dr. Marden can help!
