Depression in the workplace is often made fun of in movies and television shows. However, to many who are afflicted with the disease, it's no laughing matter. All too often, people are wasting their lives away in drab cubicles and going through their daily work routine with little enthusiasm, only motivated by the paycheck due to them at the end of the work week - but it doesn't have to be that way! If you're sole reason to clock in at work is so that you can pay the bills, then there's something very wrong, and you are encouraged to make a positive change. Dr. Orison Swett Marden, founder of the American success movement in the late 19th and early 20th century, was one of the first people to point this out. The acclaimed writer abandoned his successful business endeavors to follow his passion, writing. Through his writings, he delivered the message that any human being, no matter how ordinary, could achieve greatness and be happy. As a result of his career choice, he no longer viewed work as a necessary evil. He saw it instead as an opportunity for personal growth, and a way in which he could serve the world around him, in the present and for generations to come. Dr. Marden was way ahead of his time. Although he may not have realized it as he was writing books during his 30 years as a popular author, his work was quite literally changing the nation. After Dr. Marden, came notable authors like Dale Carnegie and a new reinvigorated America – an inspired people that realized success came to those who chased after it, not simply to those who were born rich and “lucky.” Before this stage in American history, people believed that they were dealt a hand of cards and that was simply the end of it. It was Dr. Marden who opened their eyes and told people that their destiny could be anything they wished it to be, provided they believed in themselves and were willing to do the work necessary for their dreams to become a reality. Dr. Marden tackled depression in the workforce head on. In books like “Peace, Power and Plenty,” the eloquent and inspirational author expressed the powerful idea that everything in the world that is worth obtaining in life is available to all – there isn't a limited amount of happiness in the world that has to be allocated unevenly to people. This enchanting idea reinvigorated Americans and taught them that if they were miserable, at a job or in a relationship, etc, they didn't have to be. They could transform their lives. They could be happy. They simply had to want to be happy. So if you know depression in the workplace all too well, it's time to rethink your job.
