Handling Depression In Young Adults

Article

Depression in young adults is on the rise. At the extreme we see and hear about teen suicide and even school shootings, so this is not a subject to be taken lightly.

So how do parents make sense of it all? How do they know if they're adolescent is simply exhibiting normal teenage emotional stress or if there is a bigger issue at hand?

Even if you maintain a good home for your child, they are still at risk for emotional challenges – as today's society is stressful for teens.

As our society evolves and now offers instant access to information of all kinds, good and bad, it’s understandable how some teens can get caught up in this fast paced, competitive environment.

So what are the symptoms of depression? There are specific signs of depression in young adults that you should keep an eye out for.

Some of the biggest symptoms include a major change in eating or sleeping habits. It's normal for teens to be somewhat melancholy or restless at times, but when their moodiness lasts for weeks on end – you should take notice.

If your child articulates feelings of hopelessness and seems obsessed with death or suicide, then you should particularly pay attention and take immediate action and seek professional help.

Depression in young adults is an interesting trend and it is all too often overlooked as normal teenage behavior.

But don't be so eager to brush off your child's journey as ordinary – he or she may very well be battling some level of depression and if so, they probably will be hesitant to ask for help and will instead act out.

If your child's grades are poor or if his or her life is affected adversely on a day-to-day basis by a bad mood, then you have cause for concern.

However, if your teenager is simply moody, yet is effective and productive otherwise, you may just need to be patient and watch the situation closely as time resolves the issue.

Keeping the lines of communication open with your teenagers is recommended whether you have concerns over their emotional wellbeing or not.

There is some amazing literature out there that might benefit your teen, as well as yourself!

Dr. Orison Swett Marden remembered what it was like to be a youth and many of his classic books were written with depression in young adults in mind. He was way ahead of his time.

As the founder of the American success movement in the 1800's, he realized that the future of the country really was its children and so he wrote many books that catered to them. He understood that young adults like to hear real-life rags-to-riches stories of great triumph.

For example, in his book “Little Visits With Great Americans,” readers are treated to the inspiring autobiographies of a variety of successful leaders and entrepreneurs of the United States. So consider handing your teenager a copy of one of Dr. Marden's classic books.
