Depression Warning Signs
Early Treatment Can Save A Life

Article

What are the depression warning signs? If you don't know them, then you may miss out on an opportunity to save someone's life.

Depression is an increasingly tragic problem in the United States. From the wealthy to the poor, Americans are often unhappy about their lives.

For some, depression stops them from following their dreams. For others, the consequences can be even worse.

So, whether you're concerned about yourself or those around you, it's important to understand the symptoms of depression. Some symptoms of depression are obvious, while others are certainly far more elusive and harder to see.

So, let's go over some of the most basic depression warning signs. Perhaps you'll be surprised by some of these depression warning signs – or perhaps you will think some of these behaviors are normal!

Depression warning signs:

  • Noticeable change in appetite or sleep schedule
  • Emotional outburst; overreacting to situations with anger, sadness, or other extreme feelings
  • Abuse of drugs, alcohol, or sex
  • For the youth: truancy, poor grades, petty crime
  • Withdrawal from social circles and families
  • Decreased interest in hobbies and activities that used to be enjoyable
  • Talks of suicide and other morbid thoughts
  • Expression of hopelessness or death in art: music, poetry, etc
  • Intense weight gain or loss
  • Decreased performance (on the job or at school)

Hopefully now that you know some of the general symptoms, you can be more in tune with your surroundings and loved ones. Depression is more easily tackled early on, so that's why these depression warning signs are so important to identify!

You'll especially want to keep a close eye on those who have endured big life events, like a change of job, a divorce, the death of a loved one, etc.

While there is such a thing as normal, purposeful depression – when it turns into a chronic problem, that's when something must be done!

A good self-help author, for people who are suffering from depression to turn to, is Dr. Orison Swett Marden, writer of such classic books as “Ambition.”

Marden incessantly encouraged readers, in book after book, to expect success in their lives and to pursue their goals with intense confidence.

He didn't want people to rely on the perceptions of others in rating their own abilities and chances for success in life.

Instead, he encouraged his readers to have faith that their ambitions were achievable with enough will and determination behind them.
