Developing self esteem can be a complex process. We are all born with tremendous hope, joy and optimism. The first time we touch the fire and feel pain; the first time we get teased or ridiculed at school; these experiences, while normal in many ways, all tell us that there are limits to what we can do and that not everybody will always like us or treat us fairly. So how does one go about developing self esteem and getting back that strong sense of confidence we once had as a youngster? Dr. Orison Swett Marden’s vast writings provide an incredibly optimistic and hopeful message – that every man, no matter how ordinary, could achieve greatness. No, we can't touch the fire without getting burned, but we are often capable of the seemingly impossible! Dr. Marden specifically addressed how one's outside appearance and demeanor affected one's potential in life with his book “Power of Personality.” In “Power of Personality,” Dr. Marden taught that developing self esteem required not just inner enlightenment, but good dress and manners. Pride in one’s appearance is key to developing self esteem. Have you ever heard that phrase “dress to impress?” Well, that's what Dr. Marden meant. He believed that if you dressed the part, you'd get the part; in fact, you might do better than another more qualified person at a job interview, simply because of how you present yourself. This is not to say that the world is a superficial place, but it is a proven fact that in many situations looks and more importantly – manners – matter. If you dress appropriately, you're saying something. If you also act appropriately, you're saying that “something” even more clearly. Developing self esteem is important to our success. Nurturing the positive thoughts about ourselves is of the utmost importance to our growth and personal development. Marden advises us to adjust our behavior and attire for whatever setting we find ourselves in. This does not mean we should “fake our way” through an interview! Quite the contrary, it simply means that a person who is sincere and kind and respectful will have an advantage over a person who is rude, anti-social or indifferent to their surroundings and appearance. So, see what a new pair of pants or shoes and a new attitude can do for you.
