Early Symptoms Of Major Depression
Identify and Treat Quickly

Article

What are the early symptoms of major depression? Sometimes we discover that a person is emotionally troubled when it's too late – when they're lives have already been ruined, their family and friends devastated, or in some extreme cases, after they take their own lives.

Let's not let it get to this point. Instead of examining depression from the inside out, we need to learn about what the warning signs are. In addition, we need to learn the warning signs that aren't so obvious.

How can we tell if someone just had a typical mood swing or whether they have been greatly affected by a life event?

How can we tell if they're coping with something more serious, like major depression?

Fortunately, there are a lot of early symptoms of major depression that we can look at. Essentially, the more symptoms you witness, the more important it is to take action. A person may exhibit only one of the early symptoms of major depression and in that case, it's best to continue paying attention but not overreact.

However, if a person exhibits more than one sign of ill health, it's time to get serious, wake up and offer a helping hand.

So, what are the early symptoms of major depression? Some are simply the same symptoms of advanced depression, but to a lesser degree. Others are more surprising.

Expect that early on, a depressed person may not realize what is happening and thus may not articulate that they need help.

This is the time when help is most important, and can be the most effective!

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Changed sleeping and eating patterns
  • Emotional outbursts; overreacting to situations
  • Loss of interest in activities and hobbies that used to be enjoyable
  • Lack of engagement with friends and family

Hopefully these symptoms can help you to detect a person who may be suffering from depression. But what do you do once you've recognized symptoms like these?

Be supportive. Talk to the person and see if you can find out what issues might be bothering him or her.

Recommend books like Dr. Marden's “Keeping Fit” (which helps people learn the steps toward a healthy physical and emotional, life) and offer resources like professional therapists.

You can be the link between the depressed person and the help that he or she is in dire need of receiving.

One tool worth considering is the Leadership Series For Successful Living, which offers five classic books of Dr. Marden's. The countless messages of hope, joy and inspiration are helpful to anyone struggling to find their way in life.
