Education and Salary
The Link Is Strong, But Different

Article

Is it really true that education and salary are linked? Yes. Now, more than ever before.

We're not simply talking about a high school education, or even just a college education. Ongoing education throughout one’s life is really the key to long-term success.

Today, a degree from a good university is more and more commonly put on a job applicant's resume.

What used to be a unique plus is now almost taken for granted. As high school graduates attend college in increasing numbers, not only is getting into a great college more competitive, but getting a great job without a college degree can be extremely difficult.

When talking about education and salary, one does not want to generalize too much.

Learning from a higher institution is not always a necessary asset for everyone: some seek to be self-educated and others are pursuing a trade that requires their full attention and higher education is simply a distraction.

These people will do just fine and in fact better than many college graduates. Similarly, many college graduates are studying in a field of interest that ultimately may pay very little!

For instance, an artist or a teacher may be able to have their career as a result of their education, but that does not mean they will benefit from a hefty income.

So, when we talk about education and salary, we must acknowledge that general trends aren't always relevant in an individual's life. However, there are basic conclusions that can be easily and definitively made about education and salary.

For instance, while those right out of college are often paying off loans and haven't accrued a lot of income as compared to those who got into the workforce right out of high school, they still will typically make significantly more money in the long run.

As well, that gap of income is only widening with time – as a college degree becomes more of a necessity than a luxury.

Regardless of one’s level of formal education, it is now more important than ever to commit to ongoing and continued self-discovery.

Education comes in many forms and today it is easy to pursue our field of interest on our own.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden recognized early on, in the early 1900's, of the importance of an education. He saw it as a source of freedom for those who weren't born into wealth as it gave them the tools and resources and knowledge to pursue whatever career they wanted.

In his wonderful self-help books, like “Ambition,” he taught that as long as a person had the drive to succeed, they would indeed succeed. He believed ambition rested within each and every one of us and it is only those of us who ignore it who fail!

This idea is an inspiring one and it is in this sense, that education is so valuable. Ongoing self-education often helps us to determine what our passions are.

Our passion is that thing that sparks our ambitions and drives us to pursue our higher self.
