Effective Leadership Traits
Ongoing Self-Education Is Key

Article

What are the most effective leadership traits? If you want to be a good leader, you'll be useless if you don't thoroughly understand why the best leaders became so successful.

So many people are resigned to being followers or “leaners,” and this is probably not in line with their true wants or desire.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden believed that most people do not fulfill their potential.

They are satisfied with achieving little and following less ambitious goals and less extravagant dreams, even though they are capable of a great deal more.

In his many self-help books, which he published in the early 20th century, Dr. Marden encouraged more from readers. He told them that they had every ability to be as great as the CEO's and presidents of the time.

Marden believed strongly that it didn't take a high IQ or an incredible talent to be wildly successful in life.

In fact, in his book “How to Get What You Want,” Dr. Marden's most practical advice was simply to think habitually about prosperity, rather than failure.

Dr. Marden reinforced, in book after book, that a person's thought patterns would strongly affect their life. That was the key factor in anyone's path toward happiness or unhappiness.

So what did Dr. Marden think the effective leadership traits were?

Dr. Marden proposed that every human being could be a leader in his or her own right and that the followers who chose not to tap into their uniquely effective leadership traits were voluntarily succumbing to mediocrity.

Dr. Marden wrote many compelling autobiographies about the greatest leaders in the nation – from presidents to businessmen. He realized that in order for people to answer their calling, they had to learn about others who did the same thing!

Effective leadership traits such as decisiveness, initiative, dependability, tact, integrity, endurance, courage, knowledge, loyalty and enthusiasm, were common in his stories.

Traits that may inspire you to take control over a situation in your life or start up a company or guide your employees more effectively will always serve you well. There is a leader within each and every one of us and that inner strength, once unleashed, is unstoppable.

Some great effective leadership traits include the ability to inspire confidence in others simply by having confidence yourself. You also must command authority, without patronizing your inferiors. These are some of the most common qualities of a good leader.
