Fighting Depression
You Are Not Alone

Article

When fighting depression, it is not uncommon for people to lash out and experience wild mood swings.

For the individual who is dealing with depression, anxiety or panic disorder, it may feel natural to lash out at others, or want to remain quiet and brood in the corner when one is unhappy.

Leadership Quote

"We learn the rope of life by untying its knots."

- Jean Toomer

Each person may respond differently, but we must remember it’s not the person, it’s the illness that is lashing out.

In the old day, people who were fighting depression didn’t even know they had an illness. Fighting depression symptoms wasn’t even something that was discussed.

In the 1800’s, Dr. Orison Swett Marden was raised a poor and mistreated orphan. It seemed the odds were stacked against him.

However, at a young age, he decided he wasn't going to live the life seemingly destined for him and he wasn't going to get angry about his situation – he was determined to overcome his obstacles and find happiness and success in life.

Fortunately for him, fighting depression was never a real issue, but if he allowed his circumstances to overtake his mental health, it could have certainly halted his success.

After graduating from Harvard University, Dr. Marden discovered the art of writing and the wisdom of Scottish writer Samuel Smiles, who preached a doctrine of self-help.

Dr. Marden wanted to communicate and expand on Smile's message and deliver it an American audience. He did just that with a number of books and even a magazine called Success.

Dr. Marden had interesting advice for those fighting depression and other illnesses. His advice was, “life makes way for the determined”, “I will find a way or make one”, “press on, no matter what the odds” and “keep your calm and hold your tongue!”

In other words, practice self-restraint, self-control and never buy in to what others say is not possible.

In his book “Manners,” Dr. Marden established that a man who had control over himself would also have control over his life and thus, his own happiness.

So if you're struggling with depression, reach out to identify resources that can help you. Get medical attention if necessary. Whatever it takes, make it happen so you can go on to live a more fulfilling and productive life.

Sometimes, when fighting depression or other obstacles, it's the simplest things in life that make the biggest differences. And even though Dr. Marden died in the 1920's, perhaps his idea about success and living a balanced life is even more important in today's society than it was in his.

With the Leadership Series For Successful Living, you can listen to Dr. Marden's classic inspirational teachings, at no risk, in an audio format.
