Leadership Philosophies
Which One Is Right For You?

Article

There are three basic leadership philosophies that have been in practice in years past and even still today. While one philosophy tends to work more often than the other two, there's no wrong answer really.

Successful presidents, army commanders, schoolteachers, CEO's, church leaders, and business men and women have used each one of these philosophies.

If you're a leader, and looking for the answer to how best lead your team through a particular challenge, the important thing to do is determine which philosophy will best support you in your quest and to respond accordingly.

Different situations require different leadership philosophies. So what are these three options?

The In-Your-Face Leader
Of all the leadership philosophies, this is probably the least likable. Too often leaders resort to it when they are feeling insecure or placed in a corner. While it can sometimes be necessary to speak firmly and with great insistence, it really should come into play as a last resort.

The In-Your-Face Leader is essentially someone who is keen on micromanaging every detail and exercises total control over his or her inferiors. This tends to be seen in large companies where tasks are handled by those with only moderate expertise and ability.

The Hands-Off Leader
While the Hands-Off Leader is probably the most loved and respected in an office or classroom, etc, he or she is at risk of being ineffective.

The Hands-Off Leader will give the green light to people on certain tasks and give general guidance – but little else.

For companies or groups where the people involved are highly trained and creative and need room to thrive, this is the best of the leadership philosophies to go by. But where more order is needed, it can actually work against your ability to achieve best in class results.

The In-Between Leader
The In-Between Leader is a mixture of both the leaders above; in most cases, the In-Between Leader is the best leader to have around. He or she will supply clear, strong leadership and help to manage conflict and answer questions effectively. However, he or she will be open minded to new ideas and trust workers to get the job done without being overbearing or patronizing.

If you want to learn more about great leadership, a book along those lines is “Getting On” by Dr. Orison Swett Marden. Dr. Marden, after all, was one of the greatest leaders of his time and in his many books he sets out to inspire people to stand out from the crowd, get out of line, and follow the beat to their own drum – be unique and independent and ultimately, a leader.

Dr. Marden had to do this himself. Rising out of poverty and abuse, he had to find his own way and eventually ended up as the first self-help author in the nation in the 20th century. You can listen to Dr. Marden's greatest teachings online with the Leadership Series For Successful Living.

Anybody who has any ambitions to become a great leader would be foolish not to seek out Marden’s timeless wisdom and sage advice, not to mention his priceless words of inspiration.
