"Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have."

- Zig Ziglar

Dr. Orison Swett Marden was a firm believer that even those who were not “born leaders” could still rise to any challenge and be heroes in their own right; they only needed the motivation and a determined will to press forward despite any obstacles.

The key is to truly explore your inner reserves and properly evaluate your positive assets. This was the advice Dr. Marden, America's first self-help author of the 1900's, gave in his book “The Exceptional Employee.”

We spend so much time dwelling on our faults. Dr. Marden did indeed see great use in a person determining his or her faults – how else will he or she handle overcome them if they do not acknowledge that faults exist?

However, the same amount of time must be spent on appreciating and developing one's strengths!

Instead of resigning yourself to a life of following others and letting other people do the big work, ask yourself – what is your leadership trait qualities and how can you use and develop those traits to become a better leader?

It's okay if you're not going to be the next CEO or president of the United States – but chances are you are not actually exploring your true potential as a human being. So few people ever take the time to invest in themselves.

Dr. Marden's central message in all of his books and especially in “The Exceptional Employee,” was that most individuals are capable of a great deal more than they achieve, and this is a sad fact.

Now that you're exposed to this message, however, you have the opportunity to find out what you have to offer the world and consequently, go out and give 100% of yourself to whatever endeavor you choose.

This quality of “taking action” is a leadership trait to nurture.

The leadership trait of “patience” or “good rationale” or “compassion” or an “impressive writing ability” - whatever trait you identify, you must work to develop and continuous improve in that area. It’s a never-ending process that great leaders embrace throughout their entire lives.

You must look at your weaknesses as things to improve upon – not realities you must accept – and you must look at your strengths as holding limitless possibility for you!
