Curious as to what the leading causes of stress are? It's a good question, because Americans suffer from high stress on a daily basis and it's of the utmost importance that they tackle the problem head on.
Stress should not be treated as a normal fact of life or something that pressures us to move on through our day-to-day routine. No, stress has very little benefits to us. Sure, stress will pop up in our lives on occasion and we don't always have control over it. But chronic stress that plagues us every day will have very real and negative consequences in our life. Not only does it bog down our minds, wearing down our spirit, but it also will affect our physical health! Wondering why you get headaches often or fall ill more than usual, or get sweaty for no apparent reason? It very well may be stress! Dr. Orison Swett Marden, author of a series of self-help books in the 1900's, was one of the earlier thinkers to realize this fact of life and pinpoint the leading causes of stress. He believed that people let stress and depression and other negative mental states take over their lives and prevent them from fulfilling their true potential. In his classic book “Keeping Fit,” Dr. Marden remarked about a carpenter who used dull tools because he was too busy to sharpen them. It is clear that if the carpenter took the time in the first place to sharpen those tools, he would have been more efficient and produced better quality materials. This is the same way we should think about our emotional troubles – we must confront them early on and settle them. We will only be happier, healthier and more productive as a result. So, let's get back to the leading causes of stress. The leading causes of stress vary, depending on where you live and your environment. For instance, some of the most stressful events are the loss of, or illness of a loved one. In addition, job related stresses account for a great deal of stress, as does financial issues, teenage issues, and also health and spiritual issues. Whatever the cause, however, you can – and should - say “no” to stress! In “Keeping Fit,” Dr. Marden reminds readers that in order to nurture the mind, one must nurture the body, and vice versa. So, if right now you don't feel like you have much control over your work schedule and the thoughts running around in your head are taking their toll on you, take small steps toward better physical health like eating more fruits and vegetables, exercise and allow yourself time to reflect and plan your day in a quiet environment.
