Management Versus Leadership
What Is The Difference?

Article

Do you know who wins in the battle of management versus leadership?

If think you do, then we caution you because you may be looking at it all wrong. The truth is that it’s a bit of a trick question – as the answer is no one wins!

Leadership Quote

"You may be disappointed if you fail but you are doomed if you don't try."

- Beverly Sills

Perhaps you're somewhat confused by the question because you thought the two terms meant the same thing? Maybe you didn't think there was any difference between a manager and a leader. It’s true, some managers are effective leaders too, and many leaders are also good managers.

However, the two are not the same. So when talking about management versus leadership, we must understand that an individual may have to exercise both managerial and leadership skills. But let's first differentiate between the two skills.

A leader:

  • Inspires and Motivates people
  • Communicate a clear vision
  • Clarifies the goal
  • Guides the direction of the project

A manager:

  • Gives specific directions
  • Delegates tasks
  • Meets Timelines
  • Deals with the small details of the project

You see? You can't have a leader without a manager or a manager without a leader. Management versus leadership is basically a discussion about how different skills and tasks should be accomplished by different people toward one end goal.

There needs to be a visionary who can paint the big picture for the people, but then there needs to be a person who can be the order taker and ensure that others complete the various tasks on time and in an efficient manner.

A person is often both a leader and a manager, at different times. It's important to understand management versus leadership, however, and be clear about what each role is. One great resource for learning about how to guide a company on the micro and macro level is the Leadership Series For Successful Living.

Dr. Marden’s series of self-help books are designed for individuals who want to achieve success and happiness in life. He was determined to arm his 20th century readers with the right attitude about life. Many of his books were specifically designed for business owners and aspiring leaders.

His book “Success Nuggets” is another great resource, which addresses the work environment and how it should foster the same kind of joy and happiness that home life does.

It's a great read for those who want to encourage their employees, rather than simply give them orders.

We encourage you to learn more about management versus leadership. While each are necessary skills to acquire, the best and most successful leaders will become competent in both areas.
