Mission Statements Purpose
The Power Of Written Goals

Article

It seems a bit redundant to say a mission statements purpose. After all, isn't a mission statement simply a statement of purpose? Don't they go hand in hand?

Well, if you're to write a quality mission statement that can be effectively used, you have to understand the importance and logic behind a mission statement in the first place. Otherwise, it's just going to amount to a series of words you jot out that does little to help you achieve your ideal outcomes.

When you grew up in grade school, your teachers probably prompted you to write and sign mission statements – sometimes written by them and other times written by you.

You probably didn't take these assignments all that seriously.

However, as we get older, we begin to realize the power of such a document. If a business contract must be honored, then so must a personal contract with yourself be honored, right?

A mission statements purpose is to aid you in focusing your goals so that you can effectively follow through with them. It is a form of accountability.

Without someone or something to constantly remind us of what we want in life, we can easily forget it and change our desires based on our shifting doubts and insecurities.

The key is to believe in the impossible and to aggressively go after our dreams. So that's a mission statements purpose: to spur us forward.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden would have been a firm believer in writing a mission statement for one's life. In fact, that was his central thesis: as long as a person had a clear ideal for themselves, they could become it through sheer will and determination.

In his book “Be Good To Yourself,” Dr. Marden elaborated on this seemingly outlandish idea by illustrating how a man can be content with his current circumstances, while still striving for more at the same time.

If you want to listen to Dr. Marden's inspiring teachings, you can download them in an all new audio format, available online as the Leadership Series For Successful Living.

So now that you recognize a mission statements purpose, it's time to get to writing. Think about what you want to accomplish in every area of your life – relationships, jobs, skills, etc – and write down concrete, specific goals for yourself.

Once you decide what goals you want to accomplish, you'll be all that closer to accomplishing them.
