If you're searching for your next career, you're hopefully not without a purpose. Dr. Orison Swett Marden, in his classic book “Choosing a Career,” was greatly frustrated by the all too common practice of choosing a job based on a paycheck rather than a purpose. What was the main reason for such unhappiness in America, Dr. Marden believed? An uninspiring job with too many hardships. He often showed how silly it was to base a career choice on money alone. After all, consider how many hours you might log in at work during the week! 40? 50? Possibly more? That's a lot of time. It should be enjoyable; it should improve you as an individual and also improve the quality of your life. It shouldn't just help you keep the lights on. Clearly, we must work to afford our necessities and our luxuries. But a job is only worth it in the long run if it is not without a purpose. “Choosing a Career” can help steer you in the right direction. First off, you must determine what it is you are good at it and what it is you find fulfilling to do. Don't just think about what kind of car you want in your driveway. Think also of what kind of work you would find satisfying to perform every day. Some of the richest, most successful individuals are the most unhappy. It's those who are not without a purpose that walk around with a smile on their face and can truly say they are happy and content. Now, Dr. Marden insisted that good pay usually was accompanied with a job that is not without a purpose. First off, in the early 1900's, when he was writing – Americans had a new variety of careers to choose from, which meant that if they played their cards right, they could do something they truly loved that would also support their lifestyle. Additionally, when a person is doing something that he or she enjoys and excels at, the sky really IS the limit. People who are not without a purpose are the people who are also financially successful. If you're fascinated by Dr. Marden's theories, why not listen to more of what he has to say? Finding your purpose should be your ultimate goal, it’s important that you end up doing what you love to do. Marden’s powerful teachings help guide you along the way to identifying your purpose.
