They have let their impressionable years go by without preparing for anything worthwhile. Not having expected much of themselves, they have gone from one thing to another, wavering, never quite making up their minds what they were going to do.
Every line of endeavor is overcrowded to the weak and irresolute. Those who lack backbone cannot find an opening or make one anywhere.
Don't you see, my wavering friend, plenty of young men climbing up rapidly in the very specialty you desire to enter, but which seems so crowded to you? If others can climb above the crowd of a dollar-a-day man and gain their way to something better, why can't you? There is a big difference between the man who hesitates and says he 'may try' to do a thing, and the man who firmly decides and says he 'will' do it.
It is not enough to resolve to be somebody, you must determine to be somebody with all your might, with all your enthusiasm, with all your strength, all your energy. You must be all there; you must fling your whole life into your occupation.
