Self Esteem And Poverty
Finances and Self Confidence

Article

Are self esteem and poverty linked? The answer is surprisingly, Yes and No.

It is quite often, although not always, a person's perception of their financial situation that affects his or her self esteem.

For example, a rich man who is jealous of his neighbor's bigger house may have a bad opinion of himself, while a poor person who is happy with his lot or at least believes in his future, will have a good opinion of himself.

The fact remains, however, that we do often judge our own self-worth by the worth of our home, car, investments, and other belongings. When we're stuck in a cycle of debt and struggling to pay the bills, many feel as if they are failure.

As a result of this self-loathing, low self esteem and poverty really do go hand in hand.

The key is to understand that money doesn't make a person happy.

However, controlling your money and managing it wisely, does build self confidence and esteem. In other words, if you feel you have power over your income and spending habits, you will feel as though you have power over yourself and your destiny.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden grew up a poor boy and he certainly wouldn't say that low self esteem and poverty are an inevitable pair.

He had tremendous faith in himself and as a consequence of strong mental reserves, he graduated from Harvard, published a series of self-help books, and finally found financial success. But his profitable business endeavors were a product of his high self esteem, not a precursor to it.

Dr. Marden believed that poverty was no excuse for entering into social situations with a noticeably negative attitude and bad appearance.

In his book “Power of Personality,” Dr. Marden urged readers to carry around a cheery, polite spirit with them wherever they went and to also dress appropriately.

He taught that manners sometimes go farther than merit, because it is in our nature to be attracted to gentle, kind people, even if they are less talented or intelligent than someone who is withdrawn or rude.

So, while Dr. Marden acknowledges a link between self esteem and poverty, he encouraged his readers to accept no other person’s assessment of yourself. Rather, he inspired his readers to look deep within themselves and to become resolute in the purpose of following their dreams and raising their spirit.

Dr. Marden can help you to do the same. His most memorable teachings have been compiled in the Leadership Series For Successful Living, a collection of five powerful audiobooks that will reinforce the idea that self esteem and poverty do not have to go hand in hand.
