Self Esteem Building Activities Self-Talk Matters
Article
Self esteem building activities are sometimes necessary for people to find balance and happiness in life.
Too often, otherwise high performing individuals still struggle with feeling of self doubt and of not measuring up to others, or their own, high expectations.
No matter what they do, they somehow do not feel as if they are worthwhile human beings and they see themselves as forever falling short of what they truly desire in life.
Luckily, there are a variety of self esteem building activities that can inspire a person to rethink themselves and their place in the world and suddenly find a new motivation for waking up everyday.
We could all benefit from investing some much needed “me” time, to work on the quality of our own self-talk.
Self esteem building activities to consider doing (you have nothing to lose!):
- Stay in tune with the people in your life
Reinforcing and building new and old relationships with the family and friends in your life is important for your self esteem. Give time and energy to the people who you care about, and who make you feel good about yourself.
You'll find that as you give more, others will give back and your life will be enriched. You'll feel satisfaction from helping others, especially those who mean a lot to you. Avoid those in your life who seem to zap your confidence. Don’t let their issues become your problem.
- Learn to deal with failure
When you make a mistake, do not panic and beat yourself up about it. We all make mistakes. They are inevitable. Maybe you procrastinated on a project or took out your frustration on a loved one. Whatever the case, no matter how serious, it does not help to avoid forgiving yourself.
It's a lot more productive for you and those around you to forgive yourself, learn from the mistake, and move on. There is no failure in failing a task, failure only comes from quitting.
- Make a “pro” list
If you suffer from poor self esteem, chances are you are only focusing on the negative aspects about yourself and your life. Instead, start developing daily habits of self-recognition. Make a list of all the things you genuinely like about yourself – you might find the list goes on and on! Surprising, huh?
Negatie self talk is at the heart of almost all stress, anxiety and depression issues. You must become aware of the thoughts and communications you allow into your head. This is one of the most important self esteem building activities you can engage in. Talk nice to yourself!
- Mirror, mirror on the wall
Even if you don't believe what you're saying, recite positive hopes for the day and for yourself every morning. It helps if you look in the mirror while you recite these things as well. Maybe you feel differently on the inside, but the more frequently you “fake it” on the outside, the more likely that your insides will change!
This exercise is a great way to reinforce more positive self talk. It might feel silly at first, but just know that you are worth the humiliation. Beside, no one will see you!
Good self esteem may not come naturally; it might take several self esteem building activities to foster habits of positive thinking.
If you need a little more inspiration, look to the words of Dr. Orison Swett Marden. The self-help guru of the 1800's may no longer be alive, but his books – including “Stepping Stones,” which teaches that confidence leads to success and happiness in life – have spoken to generations after him.
