Signs Of Teenage Depression
Teens Need A Guiding Hand

Article

Can you recognize the signs of teenage depression? If you answered “no,” don't feel bad. Most people can't. They mistake serious teen depression for regular, normal teen angst.

So many parents feel clueless about their teenage children and the various issues they face.

Little communication between a mother and son, or father and daughter, can leave a large gap the quality of the family dynamics.

While this is somewhat understandable, as adolescents can often display behavior that is temperamental and moody – teenage depression is often overlooked and sometimes there are tragic consequences.

Sadly, teen depression and suicide rates are on the rise. How could this be? Think back to when you were in high school, you can probably remember times of social stress, a feeling of insecurity and inadequacy.

Perhaps you too struggled through your younger years, as you felt awkward, like a fish out of water. But did you want to kill yourself?

Did you watch news stories about school shootings over and over again, on multiple news channels, as well as the Internet?

Obviously you didn’t because those constant messages from the media were not being shoved down your throat like many of today’s youth experience.

Whether it's because of the media, or increasing divorce rates, or a host of other reasons, teens seem to be embarking on an uphill battle that their parents simply can't relate to.

Today, more and more teens are suffering from severe depression. It's vital that as a friend, family member, or teacher of a teen, that you recognize the signs of teenage depression.

So, let's get to it. Here are the signs of teenage depression:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Drastic weight gain or loss
  • Trouble with authority; petty crime
  • Withdrawal from social circless and activities that used to be enjoyable
  • Abuse of sex, drugs and/or alcohol
  • Strange emotional outbursts of anger and/or sadness
  • Drop in grades
  • Truancy (skipping class)
  • Expression of morbid ideas about sorrow and/or death
  • Thoughts of hopelessness and suicide

Some of these signs of teenage depression are more apparent than others, but clearly if a teen is suffering from two or more of these symptoms – you should take action. There are many things you can do to help; but you can't really help if you don't see the problem in the first place.

A great resource for an unhappy teen is a book by Dr. Orison Swett Marden, famous self-help author of such classics as “Pushing To The Front”, “Self-Investment” and “Woman and Home,” from the early 1900's.

Marden’s books were often geared toward young adults and he sought to encourage their self esteem and success in life. Conveniently, with the Leadership Series For Successful Living, your teen can listen, risk free, to Dr. Marden's most inspirational books online.
