Stress Affects Health
and Thoughts Create Stress

Article

Stress affects health each and every day for millions of Americans.

All too often, people brush off stress as a non-negotiable, a regular and persistent part of their daily lives.

But if they really understood the toll it takes on not just their mind and spirit, but their body too, and that there are remedies, they might perceive this stress in a different light.

Stress has negative effects on every area of your life that you could imagine. You already know that stress wears down your mental reserves; your worries take over your thought process to the point where you find little to be happy about anymore.

After all, what does it matter that it's a beautiful, sunny day today if you have a staff meeting tomorrow that you imagine you're not prepared for?

Moreover, stress actually hinders your ability to produce quality results – if you're so consumed with your panicked concerns and doubts, you can hardly perform well at any task. Remember the term “test anxiety?”

When you hear the ominous phrase, stress affects health, you're right to assume stress not only affects your emotional wellbeing, but your physical as well.

Stress can influence your sleeping and eating habits and weaken your immune system. This means you're going to get sick a lot more often because your body is so weak it doesn’t fight off disease like it should.

You might also have tension headaches and other muscle pains as a result. But more importantly, stress increases your heart rate and can incite all kinds of potentially life-threatening cardiovascular problems – most notably, heart attack.

So, now you know the negative impact of how stress affects health, the question to you is, what are you going to do about it?

The kind of stress we're discussing here begins as a mental process. So if you want to prevent it from taking over and destroying your life, you have to rethink the way you think.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden, the famous self-help author of the 19th and 20th centuries, introduced a new concept to his readers – who at the time were coping with a new social and economic structure.

Dr. Marden borrowed ideas from his favorite writers, like Emerson and Samuel Smiles, and communicated messages of hope, optimism, joy and faith to a new audience eager to hear them.

Dr. Marden believed that success came to those who wanted it, not to those who were more intelligent or more wealthy or naturally more skilled.

He believed it was one's attitude about life that had the most effect, and little else. So in this sense, reshaping the way you view the world is the first step to ridding stress from your life.

Some of Dr. Marden's classic books include “Peace, Power, and Plenty,” which specifically focuses on finding satisfaction with life. However, if you prefer audio books, you can still hear Dr. Marden's most important messages.

With the Leadership Series For Successful Living, you can listen to five of Dr. Marden's greatest books online.

While it's true that stress affects health, it’s also true that your thinking is what creates stress – so learn how to change your thinking habits and you'll be on the road to a better, healthier life.
