Stress Among College Students

Article

Stress among college students is on the rise, and one of the culprits of this unhappy trend is surprisingly – bad manners.

Now, before you scratch your head, let's take a look at what manners are and what they're purpose in life is.

Leadership Quote

"I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions."

- Lillian Hellman

Dr. Orison Swett Marden was the first American success expert in the 1800's.

He was the leader on the topic of “self-help,” which was a relatively new item of discussion in the 19th century.

Americans were learning a new concept of individual freedom and with that came a realization that they had control over their destinies. And that's where Dr. Marden came into play.

He was inspired by a well known Scottish author Samuel Smiles, and the young Marden became determined to spread his message of hope and optimism to the entire American audience.

Dr. Marden, in his book “Manners,” believed that early practices of good manners had incredible benefits.

After all, the angry man in the corner who insults those who disagree with him hardly has the makeup of a leader. So could it really be that stress among college students is linked to poor manners and a weak character?

Well, in today's society, manners aren't nearly as stressed as they used to be. Considering that one's self-esteem is strong when one's self-control is in tact, then good manners really do contribute to a stress-free life.

After all, isn't stress, anxiety, and depression often a result of a person's low self-image?

Stress among college students often stem from fears of poor grades or social relations. But isn't it amazing how those fears dissipate when a person feels good about themselves, despite failure?

Stress among college students is obviously caused by a number of things, but it's interesting to investigate how today's culture – often ignorant of the importance of good manners – might contribute to this.

If you're a parent, it's never too late to teach your child good manners and good character. And even if you feel like you're in the dark about the issue, you can turn to none other than Dr. Marden for guidance!
