Do you know how stress and the immune system are linked? If more people knew about how stress affected every part of their lives, they would probably be a lot less eager to welcome it in to their lives. So often, a person will use stress as a tool to meet a deadline or accomplish a goal. The adrenaline rush gives them the spark of motivation to follow through with their plans. But they forget something very important. Stress is the last thing that should motivate you in life. In fact, it's only a hindrance to all that you want – it keeps you from living in the present, as you'll be constantly worrying about the future, and it distracts you from the task at hand. How can someone do their work well and efficiently if they operate under the nagging pressure of stress? There is no doubt, stress and the immune system are directly linked. That means the more stress you have in your life, the more physical problems you are at risk of experiencing. Sure, you probably know that stress can cause the occasional tension headache and in extreme cases, can lead to cardiovascular problems – heart attack for instance. But did you know about stress and the immune system? When you're stressed out, your immune system is adversely affected. Stress weakens your body's ability to fight infections and diseases. So when you have a high level of stress that consistently invades your life, you're likely to fall ill more frequently and you may even have to battle more serious illnesses down the road. The problem is that while doctors clearly know how stress and the immune system work together, to work against you, it's often difficult to specifically diagnose stress as the root cause. (After all, when you're ill as a result of stress, there are many factors at play.) One of the earlier thinkers who realized this concept was Dr. Orison Swett Marden, a writer from the early 20th century. The first self-help author in America was quick to point out that one's physical and emotional states were completely intertwined. Marden’s advice for how to find happiness and success in life was both practical and inspirational, not to mention brand new. In books like “The Victorious Attitude,” readers were convinced to entirely transform their lives for the better.
