Symptoms Of Clinical Depression
What To Watch Out For

Article

Symptoms of clinical depression: In order to cure depression, you have to recognize the symptoms.

We all suffer from a bad mood every now and then. In times of life crisis, that bad mood can last a little longer than normal.

But clinical depression is a chronic problem and also a serious one.

It is important that you recognize the various symptoms that may occur, as quickly as possible. This way you can take more immediate steps to address them head on.

The good news is that if caught early you can avoid a potentially negative occurrence in your life.

So, if you or a loved one are experiencing the following symptoms of clinical depression, then you should take action immediately:

  • Drastic change in sleeping habits (insomnia or on the contrary, sleeping for long hours)
  • Increased or decreased appetite (resulting in noticeable change in weight)
  • Frequent flu-like illnesses (stress and depression weaken the immune system!)
  • Frequent aches and pains: headaches, stomach aches, back aches
  • Panic attacks: sweating, increased heart rate
  • Trouble focusing
  • Poor job performance or grades in school
  • Decreased interest in hobbies and activities that used to be fun
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Emotional fits of rage and/or crying
  • Overreaction to criticism and other conflicts
  • Abuse of alcohol and drugs
  • Abuse of sex
  • Self-destructive behavior in general
  • Thoughts of hopelessness and intense sorrow
  • Expression of dark, morbid thoughts in poetry, artwork, etc
  • Threats of self-injury or suicide

These symptoms of clinical depression should be taken seriously and treated immediately. A person suffering from depression may suffer from just a few or a lot of these symptoms and while of course it is damaging to their emotional wellbeing, it can also potentially put their health – and their lives – at risk.

So what do you do next? Clearly, if a person has severe problems with depression, you must talk to them and direct them to medical help (if possible). It might also be helpful to recommend some self-help resources.

For instance. Dr. Orison Swett Marden published a series of self help books in the 20th century. His epic book “He Who Thinks He Can” is especially helpful for those who feel they are at a dead-end with their lives and have become lost in thoughts of hopelessness and sorrow.

If you or someone you care about is battling depression, you should also consider listening to Leadership Series For Successful Living, available risk free, as an online download.
