Teen Stress
Gaining Some Real Perspective

Article

Too many parents and teachers underestimate teen stress in 21st century America. Especially the kind that attacks high school seniors who are on the verge of having to choose their own path in life, a path that will have serious, long-term consequences.

Imagine struggling to make a high GPA so that you can be a competitive candidate for your favorite university.

Or perhaps you struggle just to pass your courses and avoid resorting to a GED.

Whatever the case, the academic pressures in high school these days can often be overwhelming for today's youth. Push the debate about education aside – teens have a high standard to live up to if they want to attend a good college and they have a lot of negative consequences to consider if they decide not to attend college.

All this contributes to a unique brand of teen stress that generations before simply did not experience to the same degree.

When a teen is applying to college, it is not just his or her grades that come into question. Other factors – like SAT score, extracurricular activities, volunteer work – will be considered by a college admissions committee.

So for the college-bound high school senior, a lot of teen stress is on the horizon. After all, a lot is expected of him or her!

Dr. Orison Swett Marden is here to the rescue – he may be able to alleviate some of this modern teen stress, even though he died almost a century ago. Dr. Marden's message from the early 1900's, as expressed in his many self help books, was largely directed to America's younger population.

Marden was one of the first to realize whose hands the future was in and so a large part of his goal was to motivate teens to fulfill their potential in life.

In books like “Choosing a Career,” he helped guide people in their search for a purpose in life – rather than simply a way to pay the bills.

Today, technology is available that Dr. Marden would be in awe over. He didn't benefit from tools like the Internet, yet he is still here to bring his message to a bigger audience than ever before.

Now, with the Leadership Series For Successful Living, you can download audio versions of five of his classic books.

So introduce Dr. Marden to your child today. A high school senior who's enduring teen stress related to choosing between a college major or an occupation might find a great deal of comfort and inspiration in Dr. Marden's equally practical and insightful advice.
