There are many types of leadership. Every organization varies in what it expects from it’s top leaders. One leadership style may differ greatly from another, but collectively it can make a team stronger. Maybe you are an experienced leader just looking for some new ideas on how you can become a more respected leader? The following information will get you started as you begin assessing your own leadership needs. Let’s take a look at three various types of leadership: The Observant Leader Of all the types of leadership, this is probably the least controlling. A more thoughtful, laid-back, observant leader is not necessarily a leader who does little from day to day, but simply someone who sparks everything into motion and then watches it all unfold. While he manages the incremental progress of his staff, he doesn’t feel compelled to micro-manage them. For an easier task or a job that has a solid team to support him or her, this kind of leader will probably be sufficient. The All-Powerful Leader This leader is probably a boss that no one really likes but in some cases, he or she can be highly respected and even revered. An all-powerful leader is someone who gives a lot of hard orders and specific directions for how things ought to be done and it's necessary for some businesses. However, this type of leader must be careful with this kind of leadership, as it can discourage employees who don’t take this sort of hard-nosed direction well. Of all types of leadership, this style may work well in some industries, and be disastrous in others. The Involved Leader A leader who directs people, but also interacts with them – in effect “Leading Laterally” – as opposed to simply taking a top-down approach – is very popular with employees and executives alike. For businesses that must grow and foster creativity and hard work, this is one of the best types of leadership. So what types of leadership best describes you and your company? Do you have a rock-solid team of intelligent and self-motivated experts working for you? If so, then a more hands-off approach might be the way to go. Do you have a big labor force with tight deadlines to meet? If that’s the case, then you might need someone more commanding in charge. For most, it's probably best to find a medium between these two. Hopefully now that you understand the various types of leadership, you can better recognize how you lead your people. Dr. Orison Swett Marden also has some great advice on leadership you will find most helpful. After all, he was the leader of the self-help movement in the 19th and 20th centuries, so you should definitely take what he has to say to heart, as his lessons in leadership are timeless.
