Value Of A College Education
No Price Is Too High To Pay

Article

How can anyone not grasp the value of a college education? Maybe you're about to graduate from high school and are hence, weighing your options. (There are so many! What path should you take?)

Maybe you're the parent of a teen who's about to graduate from high school and you're concerned about affording tuition.

Or maybe you've already made it to college, or even graduated, and you've lost sight of why you thought education was so important in the first place.

Too many people boil down the value of education to mere dollars and cents. Yes, money makes the world go round. But it's not what secures happiness – no matter what the media or the credit card companies try to tell you.

Even though tuition rates and the high cost of student loans place a monetary value on a person’s education, the real value cannot be overstated.

Certainly the most obvious and common reason for attending college is to secure a higher-paying job. However, as many students who ended up in less appreciated professions like teaching and music and art – education isn't just an asset to have on a resume.

College graduates don't always make more money than those who opt to go straight into the workforce after high school. Does this mean they didn't benefit from the value of a college education? No, not at all.

Dr. Orison Swett Marden, author of dozens of popular self-help books in the 1900's, wouldn't think so either. He was one of the leading advocates of education, as he saw it as the “Great Equalizer”.

He believed that as long as a person had the right resources, he or she could achieve greatness – no matter his or her natural IQ or ability.

Indeed, Dr. Marden truly recognized the value of a college education as it allowed him to escape his poor upbringing and achieve success in business and as a writer.

In his books, like “The Progressive Business Man,” Dr. Marden encouraged readers to fulfill their potential and recognize any and every opportunity that presented itself. One of those opportunities is of course a college education.

But it isn't simply because a college education equals a high paying job. Dr. Marden was quick to tell readers to pursue their grandest dreams, but a high income was typically a byproduct of success – not an indicator of it, in his opinion.

To him, an education was also an extremely invaluable part of one's life, a time when he or she could discover his or her own self within the context of the outside world.

This was the value of a college education to Dr. Marden.
