Have you ever given thought to year round education? In order to help you determine if you're an advocate of year round schooling, here is an article that will give you the basic information about it, including the pros and cons. The most popular version of year round schooling maintains the regular holidays, but simply requires a student to attend school for 45 days and then take a 3-week break, followed by another 45 days of school, etc. This is called the 45-15 plan. There are, similarly, 60-20 and 90-30 plans. Some schools practicing year round education even have different grade levels on different plans. So what are the benefits of a year round education? Many educators believe that students will retain what they learn better if they have shorter breaks. As well, they will only have three weeks – as opposed to three months straight for a vacation, and thus many believe children will retain more of what they have learned. It also makes schools more efficient, as they don't just go out of business for the summer and instead, remain in operation throughout the year. Other countries have year round education as well and considering that summer breaks were created because children were needed to work on the farms, the system does seem a bit outdated. However, there are plenty of disadvantages to year round education. Most notably, because it's not practiced in every city and state, parents with children enrolled in such a plan won't find it consistent with neighboring towns and states. Children too, won't be able to attend summer camps like others their age will. As well, there have been only inconclusive studies to show that year round schooling has a positive effect on a child's learning and development and retention rates. Not to mention, many schools don't even have air conditioning and are simply not prepared to teach kids during the summer. The bottom line is year round schooling will only be possible if the nation moves in a clear direction together and until there are reliable studies released that show evidence that it drastically improves a child's education. That probably won't happen anytime soon. If you want to learn more about education philosophy, consider reading the many self-help books of the famous 20th century writer Dr. Orison Swett Marden, author of such classics as “The Joys of Living” and “Pushing To The Front”, and one of the first highly vocal advocates on education for all.
