Young and Hopeless?
There’s A Better Way

Article

Today we find a growing number of young and hopeless feeling people in our society. If you are one of them, you're not alone.

Teens and young adults in America increasingly suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression and are seeking therapy and medicines as a result. Some don't have the courage to ask for help at all and their fate is the most worrisome.

Numerous factors have contributed to this increased number of mentally unhealthy adolescents and young adults and many of those factors are still mysterious.

So why is there this population of the young and hopeless? Divorce rates, influential media, pressures at school, etc, may all affect the youth of America. Considering that these young people are our country's future, this is not something that should be taken lightly.

In order to help out a loved one who may be suffering from stress or low self esteem, it's important to recognize the symptoms. After all, how do you know if you're just observing normal teen angst or something far more troubling? Are they young and hopeless or just young and angst-ridden?

So, here is a guide to the symptoms of depression:

  • Drastic weight gain or loss
  • Change in sleeping habits
  • Irrational fits of rage or crying
  • Expression of morbid thoughts in poetry, art, stories, etc
  • Threats of self-injury or suicide
  • Persistent headaches and stomach aches
  • Thoughts of hopelessness and intense sorrow
  • Drop in grades
  • Abuse of drugs and/or alcohol
  • Sexual promiscuity
  • Petty crime
  • Skipping classes
  • Problems with authority
  • Anti-social behavior, withdrawing from friends
  • Decreased interest in previously enjoyable activities and hobbies

If your teen is suffering from more than a few of the above symptoms, then you need to pay attention.

There are many options you have, including therapy and medicine, to help a young, depressed person. There is also the late Dr. Orison Swett Marden. Dr. Marden died in the 1920's, but he left behind a powerful legacy.

Marden was the founder of the American success movement in the 19th century and his many self-help books inspired millions. Many of his books were written with the young and hopeless in mind.

For instance, his book “He Who Thinks He Can” is about forming your own destiny with sheer will and determination.

Dr. Marden often shared the success stories of not only himself, but other great leaders in America, as he knew the youth learned the most from story telling.
